Metal Injection Molding

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is an injection molding process, similar to plastic injection molding, where specific and finely-powdered metals are mixed to make soft magnetic parts that are used in conjunction with magnets to enhance the magnetic field.

SM Magnetics' in house MIM facilities produce parts that are used in camera phones, blending applications, and consumer electronic motors.  MIM components are usually lightweight, uniform, low cost with volume, and very precise tolerances. 

Used in industries such as medical and consumer electronics, MIM parts provide a way for our customers to control magnetic field, costs, weight, and quality.  Our in-house MIM facilities and experienced engineering staff use state-of-the-art equipment and design capabilities to control the process.

In the world of magnetics, MIM has become a tremendous partner to compliment assemblies that utilize metals.  MIM parts have been used as shunts, shields, and other parts of the assembly to give a better magnetic circuit and yield better results than CRS or other metals.

Injection Molding

Encapsulating plastic around all or a portion of a magnet is a possibility that has made customer designs a reality.  

There are considerations that must be understood prior to injection molding a magnet, specifically if the magnet will be able to be magnetized after injection molding, and the percentage of the magnet that will be surrounded by plastic.  Our knowledge of the process can benefit you if injection molding magnets is a possibility.
